Nail Head Designs | |||
Head Designs | Type of Head | Description
BULLET HEAD | The bullet head is designed to sit just below the surface of the timber without the need for a nail punch for minimum visual impact.
FLAT HEAD | The flat rounded head is designed to sit on the surface of the timber or material being fixed. It prevents pull through and provides holding power. It is generally used where the finish or appearance is not a primary concern.
CLOUT HEAD | The clout head has an oversized flat head with no radius under the head. The head and shank meet at a 90 degree angle so that the head sits flush on the material being fastened without distorting the surface. The large surface area makes it ideal for fastening and holding non load bearing brackets, saddles and signage.
REINFORCED HEAD | The reinforced haed looks similar to the flat head but has a larger radius under the head to prevent the head from shearing off under load in structural applications. Some have a collar under the head designed to lock into sheet metal timber connections.
PEAKED COUNTERSUNK HEAD | The peaked countersunk head is designed to sit just below the surface of the timber without the need for a nail punch for minimum visual impact. The unique head shape compresses and cuts through the timber fibres as it is punched into the timber, the fibres then fall back over the head making it look smaller.
DISHED HEAD | The dished head has a rounded underside of the head that is designed to pull down and hold the plasterboard in place without breaking the plasterboard paper. The textured finish inside the dish of the head prevents filling compounds from falling out.
DOMED WASHER HEAD | The domed washer head nail is designed to be crest fixed in corrugated iron roofing. The dome washer seals out the weather whilst holding down the roofing material without distorting it.
TACK HEAD | The tack head nail has a flat square shaped head designed to sit on the surface of the material being secured. Prevents pull through and provides holding power. |
Nail Shank Designs | |||
Shank Designs | Type of Shank | Description
PLAIN SHANK | Plain shank nails are the most common type of nail and are often used for framing and general construction applications. They offer enough holding holding power for most everyday use.
TWISTED SHANK | Twisted shank nails has a square twisted wire shank. It provides additional holding power and is typically used in roofing applications.
FLUTED SHANK | Fluted shank nails are a mix between a smooth and twisted shank. It has more surface area than a smooth shank providing more holding power. The fluted shank is generally found on concrete nails and reduces stress on surrounding materialz, preventing chip out effect.
ANNULAR SHANK | Annular shank nails offer superior holding power over plain shank nails because the wood fills in crevasse of the rings. It provides friction to assist preventing the nail from backing out over time. An annular shank nail is often used in softer types of wood wheere splitting is not an issue.
MAXHOLD SHANK | Maxhold is a high strength glue coating finish that melts as the nail is driven. Once cooled, the glue sets to bond the wood to the nail shank. This finish is available in two nails shank types plain and helical.
HELICAL SHANK | Helical shank nails are generally used in softwoods to provide extra holding power. As the nail is driven into the timber, it spins much like a screw creating a tight groove that makes the fastener- less likely to back out. |
Nail Point Designs | |||
Point Designs | Type of Point | Description
DIAMOND POINT | Diamond point nails have a four sided cut point tapering to an apex. The point is centered in line with the shank so that it remains true when it is being driven into the timber.
NEEDLE / CUT POINT | Needle point or cut point nails have a guillotined cut point is extremely sharp allowing it to be easily hand depressed into material and substrate prior to being hammered in place. |
